Event Description

Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering; Everyone welcome jam 6:45pm, Open Stage 7:30pm, Feature Performers Sahara Jane and Ken Shirley at 9pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash at the door

Sahara Jane is a vocalist, composer and sarangi player based in Nova Scotia. She is a multi-faceted musician blending influences from South Asian and Canadian musical styles in a unique and uplifting way. Tonight, Sahara Jane plays with her husband, rhythm master and multi-instrumentalist, Ken Shorley.

Growing up with musical parents from both Afghanistan and Canada, Sahara was exposed to a wide range of sounds and influences which have shaped her musical life. After honing her skills in the Canadian music scene, she headed to India where she studied Indian classical music for more than a decade. While in Mumbai, Sahara connected with percussionist Ken Shorley to co-produce her 2019 release, 'Between Worlds’ and the collaboration literally became a life changing experience — the two musicians were married before the album was even released!

In their new show and album, 'Something Good', Sahara and Ken create a new soundscape of global electro-acoustic fusion.
