Event Description

Performance of Have You Seen My Sister? honours regional victims of gender-based violence.

In the fall of 2023, Kingston City Council declared intimate partner violence to be at epidemic levels in the city. That same week, a recording of a song about gender-based violence "Have You Seen My Sister?" by local musician, Aruna, was nominated Single of the Year in the Canadian Folk Music awards 2024. This performance of the entire song cycle on Monday March 4/24 during the week of International Women's Day honours both regional victims of gender-based violence as well as the brave decision taken by the Kingston City Council. Composer and vocalist Aruna Antonella Handa will be accompanied by Michael Broadhead on upright bass, and the local vocal ensemble, the Caledonias, and is free of charge in the historic Memorial Hall on the second floor of the Kingston City Hall, 7:30PM (doors open at 7pm) and all are welcome.

In addition to the five song suite, the program includes a debut of a song Aruna wrote for Metis artist Jaime Black, whose REDress project has been raising awareness about the disproportionate representation of Indigenous and Métis women on Canada's lists of murdered and missing woman. A written by Tracy Chapman and arranged for upright bass and voice will be performed in acknowledgement of the epidemic of intimate partner violence.

All are welcome.
