Event Description

Joining us from Rimouski, QC is the improvising duo Not the Music, which is electric bassist Éric Normand and bass clarinetist/soprano saxophonist Philippe Lauzier.

With their gentle noise and cracked linearity, the duo of Éric Normand & Philippe Lauzier enact a sound environment that is contemplative yet stands on the edge of the precipice; an environment in which the monsters of rough texture are tamed. Calling forth hidden lyricism from their instruments, Lauzier and Normand scrape their fingernails across the proverbial blackboard to exquisite effect.

Not the Music has performed with such notable artists as Joe McPhee and John Butcher.

Tom Richards is a musician with a kaleidoscopic range of work. A pianist, composer,

producer, and low-brass specialist, Tom has performed and recorded with such diverse

artists as Roscoe Mitchell, Ron Sexmith, Kairo McLean, The Hidden Cameras, and The

Heavyweights Brass Band.

Tom's newest offering is an audiocassette of dronescapes, the third in a series entitled

Shoreline. Performances are immersive experiences, where listeners are encouraged to

contribute to the show by using simple interactive tools to turn their phones into a fock of

birds.

Joining Tom for this performance is violinist Georgia Hathaway, whose bright, nimble voice

bridges the worlds of folk, classical, and improvised music.
