Event Description

Celebrate the music of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers!

Featuring Cuban trumpet sensation Miguelito Valdes, the lyrical Roy Styffe, the swinging piano Dr. Tony Genge, the stalwart bass playing of Peter Dowse and the incendiary drumming of leader Kelby MacNayr!!

Drummer/ band-leader Kelby MacNayr assembles an All-Star cast to bring to life the music of the legendary Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers!

One of the most successful and influential small groups in jazz history, the Messengers welcomed a revolving cast of the greatest soloists of jazz - from Wynton Marsalis to Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown & Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and Hank Mobley - the list goes on!!

Drummer and band-leader Art Blakey was born in 1919 in Pittsburg and played with a who's who of jazz greats from the swing era to post bob and modern jazz until his death in 1990. He was at the top of his field for his entire career and his style embodied the drive, personality and spirit of jazz drumming.
Please join us for this all-star tribute to some of the most swinging and sophisticated small groups in jazz history!
