Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering; Everyone welcome jam 6:45pm, Open Stage 7:30pm, Feature Performers The Banquo Folk Ensemble at 9pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash at the door
Banquo has been performing in and around Victoria since 1998. Their music comes from written and oral traditions covering more than eight centuries, performed with voice and a HUGE collection of instruments including recorders, hurdy gurdies, citterns, shawms, bagpipes, a battery of percussion instruments, and more!
In addition to regularly producing and presenting their own concerts, Banquo has been heard at community events and concert series that include the Victoria Shakespeare Festival, the UVic Medieval Conference, the Victoria Folk Music Society, Salt Spring Baroque, and the Early Music Society of the Islands. Their most recent CD, ‘Whither Are They Vanished’, was released prior to the pandemic in 2018.
Current members of the ensemble are Linda Donn, Bill Jamieson, Gwen Jamieson, Amy Reiswig, and Penny Reiswig. For their VFMS appearance, the group will be performing traditional folk tunes that tell dramatic stories of wronged lovers and otherworldly encounters, with a sprinkling of murder, mayhem, and revenge thrown in for good measure.
Banquo bridges the gap between “art” music and the folk tradition, always bearing in mind the goal of minstrels throughout the centuries has been to please and entertain their audiences, and please and entertain, they do! Plan to come and be amazed!!
