Frontcountry Contradictions explores the inherent conflict of Banff National Park through a psycho-geographical survey of the landscape and evidence of human impact on it. Comprised of a series of photographic compositions, the exhibition challenges the beauty of the park seen in countless tourist and marketing photos with the harmful and ironic realities that largely go unseen. The photographs were captured by Lee Cookson over a period of five years, during routine visits to areas in and around the town of Banff when he lived and worked there.
Central to the exhibition is a core question - is conservation of natural environments possible when humans are present? Poetic in nature, Frontcountry Contradictions draws upon satire as much as documentary forms, challenging viewers to acknowledge overlooked details as examples of our estrangement from the natural world.
Join photographer Lee Cookson for an opening reception on Sunday, November 5 (6:00 - 8:00 p.m) and learn more about the work and his artistic process during an artist talk on Saturday, November 18 (1:00 - 2:00 p.m.)
