Reading and Conversation

Bellevue

4:00 – 5:30 pm

Rosemary Sullivan is a prolific author of poetry, travelogue, short fiction, and literary biography. She has won virtually every CanLit top prize, including the Governor General’s Award, the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize, the BC National Non-Fiction Award, the RBC Charles Taylor Prize, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. Join Eric Friesen for a conversation about Rosemary’s writing life, including her much anticipated memoir.

“Few writers have done more to elevate the craft of literary nonfiction in this country than Rosemary Sullivan. Here, finally, are the stories behind the stories that inspired her art, won her acclaim, and cemented her reputation as an icon of Canadian literature.” — Andrew Westoll

Rosemary Sullivan is the author of fifteen books in the multiple genres of biography, memoir, poetry, travelogue, and short fiction. Her books include Shadow Maker: The Life of Gwendolyn MacEwen which won a Governor General’s Award, The Red Shoes: Margaret Atwood Starting Out, Labyrinth of Desire: Women Passion and Romantic Obsession, Stalin’s Daughter which won the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize, the BC National Non-Fiction Award, and the RBC Charles Taylor Prize, as well as several others. The Betrayal of Anne Frank: A Cold Case Investigation has been sold in twenty countries. Her latest book is a long-awaited memoir. In 21 essays spanning 5 decades and multiple continents, Where the World Was offers a vivid portrait of a writer instinctively drawn to other cultures and places - a solo vacation inside the Iron Curtain, meeting the reclusive writer Elizabeth Smart in a dilapidated cottage, reflecting on Pinochet’s coup, or tracking down the people who knew Svetlana Alliluyeva for Stalin’s Daughter. In 2012 Rosemary became an Officer of the Order of Canada for her contributions to Canadian culture.

Eric Friesen’s name and voice are well known to radio listeners. A long-time radio personality who has been called one of the most gifted broadcasters in the industry, Eric has hosted many CBC flagship programs, including All in a Day, The Eric Friesen Show, Onstage at Glenn Gould Studio, In Performance, and Studio Sparks.

Born in Altona, Manitoba, Eric fell in love with radio at an early age and worked his first on-air shift when he was just a teenager. He has also worked in American public radio and recently created three major radio documentary series featuring Pinchas Zukerman, Emanuel Ax, and Peter Oundjian.

Since leaving the CBC at the end of 2008, Eric has been busy serving a wide variety of major cultural organizations in Canada. Most recently, Eric helped launch Winnipeg’s Classic 107 radio station and is currently a consultant for Radio New Zealand Concert. He has also been a host on Minnesota Public Radio.

Eric is past Chair of Kingston WritersFest’s Board of Directors and a ten-year alumnus of our stage. We simply couldn’t imagine a Festival without him. He and his wife, artist Susan Friesen, live on Amherst Island near Kingston.
