Event Description

Bry Webb is best known as the singer and principal songwriter in the well-loved and celebrated Canadian underground rock and roll band, The Constantines. During the band’s four-year hiatus from 2010-2014, Webb returned to his one time home of Guelph, Ontario, became a father, and wrote his first album, Provider, released in 2011 by Idée Fixe. The album has been called, “eerie, minimal and organic,” and features acoustic guitar, upright bass, and two steel guitars simultaneously, which has become the signature sound of Bry’s solo material.

Through touring festivals and clubs across Canada and the US in 2014, Bry Webb and The Providers became a tight, joyful, freewheeling rootsy folk-rock band, able to move seamlessly from soft, emotive acoustic arrangements to full-on jammed out rock and roll expositions, reminiscent of The Rolling Stones or The Grateful Dead. Their work together is celebrated on the 2015 LP release and concert film, Bry Webb and The Providers Live At Massey Hall.

Bry Webb endeavours to give his songs life by encouraging them to change and exist in different arrangements as time goes by. He tours solo, as a duo with Rich Burnett on lap steel, a trio with Rich and Nathan Lawr, and any combination of Providers, up to the full six-piece band showcased on the Massey Hall LP. He even reworked his songs with the fifteen piece Massey Hall Big Band for a unique performance in the Summer of 2015.

As with The Constantines, he believes that playing his music live in front of people in varied and unique spaces is the greatest thing about being a musician.

Webb’s artistic endeavours as a solo artist have also included an original song commissioned for “This American Life” and a collaboration with long-time friend Feist on her album Metals, as well as contributing music to the film This Beautiful City, for which his song “Big Smoke” received a Genie Award nomination. Webb has also worked on scoring the Discovery Channel Series “The National Parks Project” with Jim Guthrie, Sarah Harmer and filmmaker Scott Smith.
