Tanya Bub reached out to Haus of Owl back in the spring to find out if we could collaborate with her on an interesting idea: to help combat prejudice which circled around the street communities of Victoria from passers by who couldn’t quite see or understand the struggles that they were facing. She discovered hidden creative and artistic talents along with a rich family spirit of togetherness despite the obvious heartbreaking surface level realities of homelessness, drug addiction, and trauma.
Tanya created an incredible sculpture called ‘Grace’ as a creative way to shine a light on these hidden strengths so that she could try to form a more compassionate perspective within the hearts and minds of our community. ‘Grace’ takes the form of a throne and is crafted from raw and humble materials, gathered from the streets of Victoria. Poems, drawings, and uplifting quotes were shared from the street community as Tanya brought ‘Grace’ into existence. Her symbolism runs deep, touching on themes of addiction, mental health struggles, poverty, and mortality. Tanya’s intention was simple yet profound: to provide a safe space for our street community to share their stories.
What started as a 10-minute documentary evolved into a one-hour testament to the courage, resilience, and strength of people facing adversity.
Eight compelling interviews with diverse members of the street community showcase their humor, intelligence, their creativity, and character.
We invite you to come along to see the result of that magical day when we all got to know and care for our community a little better.
Tickets are by donation with 20% going toward the non-profit OurPlace society to help purchase meals and clothing for the people on the streets and come with free popcorn and candy.
