Are we shaped only by our histories, cultures, societies, and families, or do we determine our own paths by seeking new knowledge and experiences? Can we listen, learn, and react to the world around us to rethink what we’ve been taught? With guests the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, this concert features works that embrace the ‘here and now.’

Don’t miss UVic Concerto Competition winner Amaya Sydor performing Elizabeth Raum’s Concerto for Bass Trombone. Bringing Home – I Lost My Talk, by Edmonton-based composer John Estacio, is based on the poem by Mi’kmaw elder and poet Rita Joe, C.M. about her experience at Shubenacadie Residential School in Nova Scotia. A Mother of a Revolution! by Omar Thomas celebrates the bravery of trans women. The program will also include the world premiere of works commissioned for this concert that confront sexualized violence.

The Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy is one of six regular force military bands of the Canadian Forces and serves as the official musical unit of the Canadian Forces Maritime Forces Pacific Command (MARPAC). Many UVic School of Music alumni have gone on to perform with Canadian Military ensembles including the Naden Band.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific Scholarship in Music Performance, awarded annually to second- and third-year School of Music students who demonstrate excellence in brass, woodwind, and percussion performance.

This concert will be available as a live stream.
