Event Description

A longstanding tradition offered annually to parishes, legions and senior groups, this year’s concert has been drawn from the real-life letters of Private John Bapst Cronin. “In sharing one soldier’s personal experience, from over a hundred years ago, the students honour the individual struggles and sacrifice of all who have been called to serve.” Says Managing Artistic Director, Caleb Marshall, who compiled and arranged the presentation with Vocal Ensemble Instructor, and director Meredith Zwicker, that will include a tapestry of classic wartime musical favourites, text and dialogue that combine to tell an impactful story. Marshall adds “One of The College’s founding principles is community rooted volunteerism and this is a way for our students to not only respect and honour those who have given so much for our freedom but also collaborate with a highly respected Military Band while actively giving back to our community.”

This will be the fourth collaboration between the Band and the College since 2018, having been interrupted by the pandemic in 2020. “We tip our hats to the Municipality of Oak Bay and to the indefatigable team at CCPA for their efforts to mount this concert and to include us every year. We hope we never have to miss another one.” says Capt. Daniel A. Moses, CD, the Band’s Director of Music. “This year is the 80th anniversary of Operation Jubilee, or the Dieppe Raid, so at this concert, we will be remembering the 916 Canadians whose lives were lost during the Allies’ ten hour raid on the beach at Dieppe on August 19, 1942. Though the loss of life that day was predominantly Canadian, lessons were learned by the Allies that saved thousands of lives two years later at the storming of the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, turning the tide of WWII.”

Tickets to the performance are by donation with proceeds benefiting the Military Family Resource Centre, and the Canadian Heritage Arts Society. Tickets are available at tickets.ccpacanada.com.
