Event Description
Yearning to feel that happy glow from live music that inspires and delights? Come experience what happens when local songstress, Lorraine Nygaard, is joined by Ashley Wey, piano; Louis Rudner, bass; and Damian Graham, drums; as they offer their in-the-moment take on each piece in this eclectic collection, celebrating the elements of a Pacific Northwest October. Lorraine’s fans rave of the connectedness between these band members; musical magic flows!
Lorraine has drawn from several genres to find songs that deliver messages of love, purpose, healing and courage. A fitting montage for early evening reflections, harvest moons, the gales of early fall, the cold crisp nights and the coming of stormy weather.
While studying jazz vocals at Victoria’s Conservatory of Music with Louise Rose, Gergana Velinova, and Gordon Clements, Lorraine was a regular soloist with the 120 voice Island Soul Choir, and the Esquimalt United Church Choir. Her Port Townsend mentors have included Rene Marie, Sachal Vasandani, and Cyrille Aimée. Songroots studies regularly build her performance capacities, mentored by jazz leaders Jennifer Scott, Brian Tate, world music diva Karla Mundy, folk Juno-award-winning Pharis Romero, icons Dawn Pemberton and Moira Smiley and gospel greats Dr. Kathy Bullock and Lonny Norwood. Lorraine loves growing as an artist.
Varied life experience including fashion design in Vancouver; 13 years in Tokyo as a wife, daughter-in-law, cafe owner, and a mother of 5; a B & B owner in Victoria as a single mom of 5; Lorraine has now been a fitness instructor for over 20 years, with10+ as a personal trainer and yoga teacher. She understands and respects the divine connection of mind, body and soul, and the healing power of voice. With a holistic approach to her work as a singer, her heartfelt messages are delivered with the full range of emotions.
Ashley Wey is a multi award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist. She has worked with Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila, Juno Award-winners Brandi Distrehaft, Mae Moore, The Parachute Club and has toured on cruise ships around the world with four-time Grammy Award winner, Manny Kellough. Ashley Wey met her bassist Louis Rudner while working on the high seas. They traveled the world together performing on cruise ships for three years before getting married and making Victoria their home together.
Louis Rudner earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Music Performance on the Double Bass/Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, and studied with many bass greats including Rodney Whitaker, Victor Wooten, Oteil Burbridge, and Paul Keller. He is a diverse musician in great demand on the local scene.
Damian Graham has performed all across Canada, USA and Europe, changing the way people think about the drums.
Lorraine will be inviting some special guests to the stage. Please check her website blog pages for updates on this performance and others.
