Event Description

Today, there is no more prominent symbol of the West Coast than the killer whale (Orcinus orca). Yet just a few decades ago, orcas were reviled and shot throughout the region. Join UVic environmental historian Dr. Jason M. Colby as he explores our transformed knowledge of and relationship with this apex marine predator. The author of Orca: How We Came to Know and Love the Ocean’s Greatest Predator (Oxford, 2018), Dr. Colby will incorporate material from interviews, archives, and personal explorations along the Pacific Coast.

The Café Scientifique series is an informal series of talks given in a relaxed setting such as a café. These talks are designed to engage the public in learning about recent research in science. Given by experts in the field, these talks provide an opportunity to stimulate discussion around some of the most exciting topics in modern science.
