ARTIST STATEMENT FOR “IN VISIBLE LINES”
What does it mean to make oneself visible and take up space? My whole life I seem to have been aiming for the opposite, keeping my head down and trying not to draw attention. It is a narrative woven through the generations of my family history of migration from China to South Africa to Canada.
“In Visible Lines” is informed by these stories of movement and displacement. With heritage far removed from China, I am drawn to Chinatowns everywhere as places that are culturally familiar and foreign to me at the same time.
