Emily Woods is running a six week course exploring writing comedy for live audiences at the Victoria Event Centre. Ending with a standup show featuring all the students. A safe space to ask questions and learn tips on writing your own stories and jokes. No need to worry about showing up to an open mic night and being the only female or minority on the bill, by the end of this course you will have the confidence to crush those shows and start performing all over the city. Open to people of all genders and sexualities, no performing or writing experience needed.

ABOUT THE TEACHER: Emily Woods has been doing comedy for four years in Canada and the UK. A strong female presence on any show: she specializes in telling the honest truth in a positive and shocking way. Focussing on confessional comedy she wants to personally connect with audience members and normalize some of the weird stuff we all think but are too afraid to say. After two years on the open mic circuit of London, England, Emily started to get frustrated with what she was experiencing and seeing at shows. She started her own comedy production company, Blazers Comedy alongside another international female comic in London. These shows focused on having diverse lineups and always putting the audience first.
Emily started being a regular act at large clubs in the UK as well as becoming an award nominated comedian.

“A striking take and a gift for finding the funny side of everything, including taking anti-depressants.” -Bruce Desseau

“She’s forever beaming with a jolly smile, even while excoriating herself over her looks or lack of self-respect, or being brashly honest about life... there’s something refreshingly engaging about her quirky presence.” -Steve Bennett

While performing every night at clubs across England, Emily worked to finish her BA Acting (international) in the spring of 2020 from East 15 Acting School. This added experience in performing has given Emily a well rounded outlook that she uses to focus on making standup shows the best that they can be for the performers as well as the audience. Emily did her first amatuer split bill show, “Bitch and Nerd” at the Edinburgh fringe to sold out shows. She was set to perform her debut one woman show “Emily Woods: Thanks For Leaving Me, Dad.” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the month of August 2020 with the professional production company Objectively Funny. The pandemic put those dreams on hold but also helped her find her way to Victoria where she now works as an Event Producer at the VEC focusing on bringing diversity and class to comedy as well as integrating standup with other performance genres.

≫ Land Acknowledgement ≪
We would like to gratefully acknowledge that the territory on which this event takes place is on the traditional, stolen, unceded land of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. We acknowledge the rich cultural history of the many peoples and rituals that have been affected by the ongoing process of dispossession and colonialism. We hold this understanding in our interactions and engagements with this land and its people.

≫ Accessibility ≪
Our seating is a combination of high tables, bar stools, and cocktail tables with chairs. If you require assistance with this, please contact us at [email protected] and VEC staff will do their best to accommodate.
There are three multi-user, gender-inclusive bathrooms with stalls. One bathroom has a larger stall with its own sink and a grab bar (more details in the ‘Bathrooms’ section).
The Victoria Event Centre currently does not have an operational elevator, and there is one long flight of stairs at the venue entrance. The only way into the VEC is up 27 wood stairs, 11″ deep, 6″ high. There are wooden 2.5” handrails 38” up the wall on each side of the staircase (54” apart, so not graspable on both sides at once). See further details in ‘Getting Inside’ section)
If you would like to attend the event but require assistance with accessing the space, please contact us at [email protected] and VEC staff will do their best to accommodate.
Inside the Victoria Event Centre there is a gender inclusive wheelchair accessible washroom that technically fits necessary size dimensions, but is missing a bar and a handrail beside the toilet. There are two stalls, in the washroom, but only one of these has been renovated to meet 5'x5' wheelchair clearance.
