Event Description

VICTORIA — On Saturday July 13 and Sunday July 14, the Victoria Composers Collective (VCC), Canadian Music Centre in BC, and Oak Bay Music join forces to present the 5th annual Oak Bay New Music Festival, offering music and discussions featuring contemporary music from Canada and around the world. This year’s offerings include three concerts, and a Q&A with accordionist Erica Roozendaal.

The weekend’s festivities kick off with a Coffee Social drop-in at Good Earth Coffee on Saturday July 13 beginning at 2:30 p.m.. The Coffee Social will be an excellent place to meet and chat with the weekend’s performers and composers. “This will be the perfect opportunity for the public to learn more about the festival and about the ideas of the musicians/composers, in a relaxed and informal setting,” say VCC co-directors Alex Jang and Maria Eduarda Martins. Saturday evening’s concert will feature performers from the Victoria Composers Collective and will include 'Infinity for Morton' by Canadian composer Linda Catlin Smith, as well as works by composers from elsewhere around the world such as Galina Ustvolskaya (Russia), and Elisabeth Lutyens (United Kingdom). The concert will also feature world premieres by Victoria composer Sylvia Rickard, and an unperformed work by Décio Arapiraca (Brazil), grandfather to VCC member Maria Eduarda Martins.

Sunday’s offerings include two concerts, both featuring accordion player Erica Roozendaal, who will be visiting Canada from the Netherlands. “Around the age of 10, I realized that I wanted to be a musician…” says Erica, “My biggest joy was writing my own songs, soundscapes, and learning to play all the music I heard and found in libraries and later on the internet.” The first concert on Sunday will feature short works written by Canadian composers followed by a Q&A where audience members can ask Roozendaal about her experience preparing these works, and ask her about her experiences as a contemporary music accordion player. Sunday evening’s concert will feature pieces written by Roozendaal, some inspired by Dutch folk melodies, as well as 'Como Soa Isso' by Victoria’s Maria Eduarda Martins.

Weekend passes and individual tickets for this event can be purchased in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door. Individual tickets cost $20 and weekend passes are $35. On behalf of the Victoria Composers Collective and Oak Bay Music, we hope to see you there!
