JazzFest has a very good track record for booking high-energy party bands, and Davina & the Vagabonds is no exception. Brought back by demand after their hit Blues Bash 2018 debut, the rollicking five-piece’s quirky, dance-happy songs evoke vintage New Orleans and the soulful swagger of Memphis. The Vagabonds take the familiar elements of blues, jazz, and R&B and somehow make it both retro and fresh. What takes them over the top is the extraordinary Davina Sowers, a charismatic vocalist and pianist who has been compared to everyone from Etta James, Amy Winehouse, and Janis Joplin . . . to Betty Boop! Maybe just call her the most engaging performer since the young Maria Muldaur strutted onto the scene. For showmanship and sassy professionalism, these guys are hard to beat.
