Event Description
Saturday, May 11, 2019 – pre-concert talk 7:00pm, concert start 7:30pm
In the final concert of the season, guest conductor Kathleen Allan explores reflections on identity, technology, and self-perception in the digital age. Music by Jeff Enns, Arvo Pärt, Hugo Wolf, Holst, Britten, Schumann and Lassus centres around the eight-movement cantata by Canadian composer Jason Noble in which he brilliantly adapts Lewis Carroll’s 1871 Through the Looking-Glass into a wholly contemporary metaphor of being drawn down into a deep abyss of technology and social media: “Furiouser and Spuriouser” or “Unforeseen Consequences of the Democratization of Knowledge.” Andrew Staniland’s “On the Surface of Water” closes the program and features an iPhone instrument to be played by the audience.
