Event Description
Six albums deep, Juno Award-winning jazz/soul vocalist Kellylee Evans has tackled everything from jazz to R&B and pop in such classics fight or flight?, Nina – her 2011 Juno-winning tribute to the legendary Nina Simone – and I Remember When. Praised for “a stunning crystalline voice, both powerful and emotive,” Evans has pushed her muse firmly into the soulful pop territory. Her 2015 Decca album, Come On, is a wonderfully refreshing album about love and life that comes on the heels of two nearly career ending accidents, including a freak lightning strike in her Ottawa kitchen.
However, Kellylee Evans is nothing if not resilient. Before becoming the runner-up of the 2004 Thelonious Monk Competition, Evans was essentially unknown and primarily focused on raising the first of her three children at her home in Ashton, a crossroads community on the capital’s western boundary. Now, Evans offers views on love and loss in an alluringly rhythmic approach that has touches of psychedelic pop, resonating soul groove and that “je ne sais quoi” that is strictly Kellylee and forged by her jazz discipline.
Kellylee Evans last performed in Victoria at TD JazzFest 2013. Evans’ time is nigh, and it only gets better when you experience this stylistic connoisseur live, in her element with Adam Cormier drums, James Meger bass, and Jonny Tobin keys, at Hermann’s Jazz Club on March 22.
