ABOUT

○ DÁLAVA ○
Guitarist Aram Bajakian and vocalist Julia Ulehla’s Dálava is a homage to traditional Moravian folk music, with fragments of poetry and verse transcribed over 100 years ago by Ulehla’s great-grandfather, a biologist and legendary ethnomusicologist. Dálava is an experiment of how traditional song grows when transplanted to new lands and new times.

This deeply personal project is fresh and bold, and the latest project by the prolific Bajakian who has toured with the likes of Lou Reed, Diana Krall, and John Zorn. Following in her great-grandfather’s footsteps, Julia is also an ethnomusicologist who has collaborated on diverse music and theatre projects.

○ IAN MCFARLANE ○
I am a multifaceted theatre artist with a fierce fascination for the discarded, the misplaced, and the forgotten. These fascinations have driven me into a study of object-oriented performance and a unique practice of landscape poetics, junkyard theatrics and performative alchemy. My obsession is with puppets and the performative potential of unusual materials.

I received a BFA in Multidisciplinary from the University of Lethbridge in 2010. Since then I have occupied Treaty 7 territory (Calgary, Alberta) where my practice has encompassed performance, scenic design, devised theatre, painting and puppetry. I am a Co-Founder of Mudfoot Theatre, an independent, interdisciplinary performance ensemble in Calgary, Alberta, as well as a Puppeteer with Bread and Puppet Theater in Glover, Vermont. I am currently pursuing my MFA in Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.

Paralleling my creative practice, I navigate my life with a bicycle, a paddle and a pair of hiking boots. Wild space, landscape and weather continue to be my greatest teachers.

○ SKYE BROOKS ○
Skye Brooks is known for his creative and subtle drumming in adventurous Vancouver bands, like Juno-award winning Fond of Tigers, Juno-nominated Inhabitants, the Tony Wilson 6tet, as well as great Canadian songwriters such as Veda Hille, Ndidi Onukwulu and Marin Patenaude. He is also the singer/songwriter and guitarist for his own experimental rock band Copilots. Skye will be releasing his first solo album in 2019 which will feature music for unaccompanied drum set, multi-layered percussion pieces, and songs for guitar and voice. His solo drum set music explores what he feels are the untapped dimensions of subtlety and sonic intimacy of the instrument.

○ BEATINGS ARE IN THE BODY ○
A new collaboration between Erika Angell (Voice, Electronics) and Róisín Adams (Wurlitzer) exploring memories, pains and emotions stored/carried by the body. The title of the piece is borrowed from a publication of the same name by Canadian poet Meaghan McAneeley. Also with Peggy Lee (Cello).

○ RÓISÍN ADAMS ○
Róisín Adams is a Vancouver-based composer and pianist whose artistic interests lie in the intersection of composed and improvised music. Classically trained from a young age in Royal Conservatory of Music, Adams draws from many genres to inform her practice. She completed her studies in Contemporary/Jazz Keyboard at Vancouver Community College where she had the fortune of studying with Alan Matheson, Lisa Cay Miller, and François Houle and was named the winner of the 2013 Contemporary Competition, the Chris Gage Memorial Award, the Fred Bass Scholarship, and the Andres Alejandro Espinoza Memorial Scholarship. She writes and performs regularly with her instrumental jazz quartet, Hildegard's Ghost (consisting of harp, prepared piano, double bass and drums) and collaborates with artists from all disciplines including visual arts, poetry, puppetry, filmmaking and dance.
