This two-day hands on workshop will cover the basics of choosing a pleasing water composition and the process for painting it using acrylics. We will cover techniques for using paint & glazes to create effective water, waves, light reflection, foam, and sand. We will learn the color difference between painting Canadian water versus tropical water.
Participants should have some experience and comfort using acrylic paints and brushes. See Supply List. Some mediums will be provided for students to experiment with.
Inspiration water photos: 2 or more 8 x 10 color photographs (they can be inexpensively printed at Walmart). For the purpose of this workshop, choose photos with an emphasis on the water rather than a lot of other background. For example, a large crashing wave or waves breaking on a beach. In class we will work through choosing a photo that will inspire a pleasing composition.
About the Instructor
Through practice, experimentation and taking inspiring workshops from some of the Island’s finest artists, Pauline has developed her own bold acrylic style. She loves painting large color saturated images, in a realistic yet painterly style. Her subjects frequently reflect her agricultural roots and her career in veterinary medicine, featuring animals and bold florals. Her intimate association with animals and understanding of their anatomy is reflected in her detailed depictions. She also paints dramatic water scenes, inspired by living near the Pacific Ocean and spending winters in Mexico. Pauline is an active member of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council, having curated their annual Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show for the past 4 years. She does workshops locally as well as private acrylic coaching in her home studio.
