Event Description
“The band artfully synthesizes Indian Bhangra and something akin to New Orleans second-line funk. Plus it’s fun as hell.” – CHICAGO READER
They first rocked JazzFest in 2013 with a marvelously incendiary performance and we’ve finally got them back! Nobody throws a better party than Brooklyn’s Red Baraat, whose beat-heavy live shows are a deliriously high-energy hybrid of brass band music and Bhangra rock. Led by Sunny Jain, who plays the dhol, an East Indian marching drum, Red Baraat throws extreme dance events moreso than mere concerts – in fact, baraat refers to an Indian wedding procession, and there’s a celebratory energy to every performance. Comprising multiple horns and percussionists and the recent addition of astonishingly creative guitarist Jonathan Goldberger, Red Baraat offers a cutting-edge mix of world music and vernacular American idioms such as hip-hop and James Brown funk. From Bonnaroo to Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festival, these guys always bring down the house. Sonny Singh trumpet/vocals , Jonathon Haffner saxophone, Kenneth Bentley sousaphone, Chris Eddleton drums , Jonathan Goldberger guitar
