Event Description
The Cookers Quintet is an exciting straight-ahead collective of some of Canada's finest jazz musicians. The group represents the best of two worlds. Drawing largely on the straight-ahead, classic jazz tradition, the band still carves out a lineage of authentically Canadian jazz music. The Cookers was formed in 2009 in Toronto in an effort to share our passion for swinging, traditional jazz music with Canadian audiences and, along the way, developed a catalogue of original music and a unique Canadian sound. The band’s freshman album,Volume 1, was warmly received by Canada’s jazz community, and even had the honour of being featured on Katie Malloch’s final radio episode on CBC as one of her favourite albums of the year. The recording was favourably reviewed by Wholentoe magazine and was played prominently on JazzFM, CBC, CJRT and college radio stations throughout Canada, climbing to number 3 on the Earshot Charts. The band received Canada Council touring grants in 2011, 2013, 2015 and now 2018 and played clubs throughout Canada, focusing on remote areas such as Haida Gwaii and the interior of BC. The Cookers Quintet continue to perform regularly in their homebase of Toronto, bringing exciting original music and top shelf musicianship to audiences every time they take the stage. The band signed with Toronto label Do Right Music n 2015 releasing The Cookers Quintet - Volume 2 in 2015 and The Cookers Quintet Meets Johnny O’Neil in 2017.
