Event Description

For the fourth consecutive year, the Victoria Jazz Society will be hosting Jazz Festivals Canada’s annual networking and booking meetings in Victoria, British Columbia. These meetings will take place from October 16 through 20, 2017. Jazz festival artistic directors from across Canada (Victoria, BC to Halifax, Nova Scotia) will be meeting in order to develop national tours for both Canadian and international artists for the 2018 festival season.

As part of these meetings, the VJS, on behalf of Jazz Festivals Canada, is facilitating a Showcase featuring musicians/bands from across Canada and the United States at Hermann’s Jazz Club on October 17 through 19, 2017. The general public is invited to attend these ticketed performances. These Showcases will feature a number of separate performances each night.

Wednesday, October 18 - Jazz Festivals Canada

John Stetch Trio

A native of Edmonton, pianist John Stetch pushes the boundaries of his jazz and classical training to incorporate melodies from all around the world and across American culture; from Mozart to Ukrainian folk music to the theme from The Love Boat. Stetch has released 14 albums as a leader, and won the Prix du Jazz award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, he has recently relocated from New York to Vancouver.

Katherine Penfold

Nova Scotia born, Vancouver based singer/songwriter Katherine Penfold pairs inspiring and soulful originals with raw, dynamic vocals, merging both her old soul and young soul – think Billie Holiday meets Tove Lo. Having sold out venues across Central and Western Canada, Penfold has taken the stage with artists like Hugh Laurie, Jeff Lorber, Brad Turner, and Juno nominated bassist Jodi Proznick. She performs in Victoria with Tilden Webb piano

Carol Welsman

Justin Time Recording Artist Carol Welsman is an internationally acclaimed vocalist and pianist whose expressive vocal styling and dynamic stage presence have captivated audiences around the world. Born in Toronto and now based in LA, six of Welsman’s ten albums to date have been received Juno nominations. She performs in Victoria with Pierre Cote guitar.
