Event Description
Café Historique Spring 2017 Lecture Series
Postponed from the night of the big snowstorm of '17! In this last (oroginally the first) of three talks this spring on the theme of "Marking Anniversaries: 1517, 1867, 1917", Dr Mitchell Hammond will return us to the central Europe of 500 years ago and the birth of the Protestant Reformation.
500 years ago, a dissenting monk unwittingly started a religious storm that shaped the history of Europe. In his talk, Dr Hammond will be discussing how early Protestant polemicists built upon the culture of print that had developed rapidly in the previous half century. Although Luther and his partisans crafted a coherent, “media-savvy” message, neither they nor anyone else was in control of the combined impact of print technology and religious sensibility.
