Event Description
In 1903, the Polish scientist Marie Sklodowska Curie (Karolina Gruszka) became the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. She received it along with her French husband Pierre Curie (Charles Berling) with whom she had a warm progressive familial union.
Marie Curie – the Courage of Knowledge covers the most turbulent years in the life of this genius -- between 1903 and 1911 -- from being the first woman awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of radioactivity, to Pierre’s death in a tragic accident and finally the awarding of her unprecedented second Nobel Prize. And she did it all while challenging France’s male-dominated academic establishment both as a scientist, and, during a public affair with a married scientist, as a woman.
Director Noëlle recreates turn-of-the-century Europe in remarkable detail.
The camera is constantly on the move as a metaphor for the Curie’s restless mind, utilizing split screen and sliding images. Gruszka’s performance reveals a complex and fascinating woman behind the brave demeanor as she takes on the white male establishment to become the only person to win the Nobel Prize twice.
