Event Description
There’s a very distinct sense of black humour, viciousness, and thrills here. You discover that like a lot of mothers, Ruth (Alice Lowe) believes that her unborn baby is speaking to her. But unlike other mothers, it seems Ruth has a baby who is urging her to murder rather random people.
Ruth allows her baby to coach her on murder techniques and push her onward in a quest to dispatch people who stand in her way, from a pet shop owner to a DJ to a lonely businesswoman. Spewing remorseless puns, her increasingly bloody attacks are fraught with gushing gore. As mother and telepathic baby’s exchanges are rife with obscenities, the whole scene puts a new spin on mother-daughter relationships that are hilarious in a serial-killing Gilmore Girls kind of way.
Through all the havoc, Ruth's bulging belly serves as a perfect alibi — after all, who would ever suspect a cold-blooded killer could be lurking behind the sweet glow of a pregnant woman?
There’s a real artist at work here. British comedian Alice Lowe isn’t just the lead in her low budget film, she’s also written and directed this baby. Her other writing and acting credits include Sightseers, Ben Wheatley’s (this year’s Free Fire) film. Lowe’s work plays in such a coordinated arena on so many levels of consciousness to fulfill a really wicked and deranged objective.
