Are you happy? If you had everything – money, respect, creative fulfillment – would you be happy? And if you weren’t, what would you do about it?
Is The Happy Film just a self-indulgent exploration or does it look at the larger question of how the developed world has so much and still we want more?
The film, and more-so the exhibition that results from Sagmeister’s journey, plays memorably with the understanding and misunderstanding of the human condition. And a person being preoccupied with all the questions I’ve just asked would probably go a long way to helping them become happy. Not in the answers but in the journey to finding the answers.
So if you’re Stefan Sagmeister, the brilliant and celebrated graphic designer, you take on the daunting task of trying to change your personality by attempting meditation, then therapy, and finally prescription medication to achieve happiness under the informed guidance of a psychiatrist.
Sagmeister’s journey is cerebral and unpredictable and infused with a sense of humour that you wouldn’t expect from someone who considers himself unhappy.
Sagmeister’s journey triggers stages of insight and empathy, at the same time luring us with voyeuristic pleasures as it strives to be painfully honest yet somehow stressfully contemplative. The artist’s film pursues the intent to be introspective but by its nature ends up being quite an exhibitionist’s piece.
