Event Description

Exquisitely shot and acted near Old Crow, Yukon, most of the film is shot outdoors, and is contemporary and oddly historical at the same time. Contemporary in that it’s a present-day narrative of a young indigenous woman who has city ways but has to go live in the north with her grandmother. Her mother has passed and her non-Indigenous father needs to go away to work and doesn’t want her living on her own.

On her journey to the north, she is not always welcomed. She ventures out onto the land to find a relative, but what she finds is that the bush can be dangerous – wind is strong and water cold, and if one is not prepared, she could succumb. An intercessor/bushman of sorts allows her to follow him but as she trails behind him like a young caribou would follow its parent, all is not safe. The mentor/mentee bond between the city NDN chick and the intercessor bushman requires close attention as they regroup for survival.

Sprinkled through out the story are teachings of the land and the confirmation that if the caribou disappear, so does a way of life. As the red tundra seeps into your bones, if you are capable of awareness and have the capacity, you will realize the importance of the land, and cultural ways.
