Event Description

The traditional image of a spiritual seeker does not usually conjure top hat, boots, shades and a '68 Lincoln Continental, but like any living tradition, it's open to change. Bill Bourne is a unique creator of music. Critics have called him "a national treasure", "an iconoclast" and "a master folk musician". The great grandson of Iceland's Poet Laureate, Stefan G. Stefansson, Bill grew up in rural Alberta listening to his parents play old time music and has been an important part of roots music almost ever since! He was a member of Scotland's Tannahill Weavers for several years, played with world renowned piper Alan MacLeod for a time, then with fiddler Shannon Johnson, blues greats Hans Staymer and Andreas Schuld, and recently with Madagascar Slim and Lester Quitzau in Tri-Continental. His most recent endeavour has been to produce an album for Iceland's Eivør Pálsdóttir, who will join Bill at his Vancouver show. At only 20 years of age, Eivør is considered by many to be one of the best musical artists in the whole Nordic Region. Her trademark intensity and astonishing variety of vocal styles – from resonantly operatic to clean folk to raw, open-throated ethnic to husky jazz – are all skilfully implemented in a sublimely personal musical expression. With her roots firmly planted in her native Faroese tradition, Eivør Pálsdóttir creates music that reaches out to enthral listeners all over the world.

The No-Shit-Shirleys, the soulful and sassy 8-piece all-women acapella group from Vancouver will open the show.
