Event Description

Locally-based charity is celebrating its 10 year anniversary!

On Friday, November 25, 2016, Moqoy invites you to share in its mission and celebrate its future at their 10th Anniversary Gala, Decade of Dreams. The event will be hosted at the spectacular Crystal Ballroom in Victoria’s renowned Fairmont Empress Hotel, with extraordinary keynote speaker, Ronald Wright.

Festivities for the night include...
- A sustainably sourced four-course dinner
- Silent auction including local tours, hotel stays, pamper packages, music, photographs, paintings, and more
- Fair-trade and hand-woven Andean textile sale (with natural fibres and dyes)
- A special presentation from our keynote speaker: Award-winning Canadian author and CBC Massey Lecturer, Ronald Wright.

All proceeds from... the night will go directly to Mosqoy's charitable programs, www.mosqoy.org/programs

The event starts at 5:30pm with an opening reception, dinner starts at 6:30pm

INFORMATION ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Ronald Wright is an award-winning Canadian author who began his writing career with one of the premier travel books on Peru, Cut Stones and Crossroads: A Journey in the Two Worlds of Peru. This work established Wright in the literary scene by expertly weaving together threads of historical sensibility, historical imagination, and the human and natural beauty of the earth. Wright’s book, A Short History of Progress, earned him the position of the 43rd annual CBC Massey Lecture series, focusing on the progress and development of societies and the connection to our natural world. Just this month, this book has been selected by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the 25 most influential books in the past 25 years. Wright’s book, Stolen Continents, among countless others, was an award-winning bestseller across the nation. Wright’s work critically examines “progress” and “development” with insightful and thought-provoking questions that push us to deconstruct the histories we have been taught. Ronald Wright’s keynote address will weave together themes aligned with Mosqoy’s values and mandate, including a critical analysis of Peru’s complex history, such as the Spanish invasion of the Incan empire and the continued effects of these systems of oppression and power that are felt by Peru’s indigenous populations today. He will read excerpts from his new book, The Gold Eaters, which just came to the shelves in paperback last month.

INFORMATION ABOUT MOSQOY:
Mosqoy is a charitable organization based in both Victoria, Canada and Cusco, Peru. Mosqoy, meaning “dream” in Quechua, the indigenous language of the Andean mountains, aims to mitigate the adverse effects of unsustainable tourism and development by providing economic opportunities for marginalized Quechua communities of the Peruvian highlands while nurturing their threatened culture. Here at Mosqoy we are involved with a variety of diverse programs and initiatives focused on educational and cultural rights to Andean communities. Mosqoy's main programs include a post-secondary education fund, a fair-trade textile initiative, and a global stewardship program.
