Event Description
Over the past four years, The City of Victoria has partnered with Open Space to transform Commercial Alley into an accessible, outdoor public art gallery, with local artists such as Troy Lovegate, Roy Green, and Liz P. Dempsey.
This year, the two organizations are delighted to showcase Victoria-based artist Daniel Ellingsen as the fourth installment for the Commercial Alley Art Gallery, located between the 500 block of Yates Street and Bastion Square. Ellingsen's Coastal Reports will open as part of the Integrate Arts Festival on Saturday, August 27 from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.
Coastal Reports combines sculptural cutouts, gold-leaf, and texture to comment on Victoria's landscape. Ellingsen's work is both playful, profound, and topical, asking viewers to reflect on the relationship between the coast and city. To celebrate Ellingsen's work, the opening will be a festive, outdoor event featuring drinks from Silk Road Tea and live music from local musician Chris Sartisohn.
Born in the UK, Ellingsen has lived and worked across Canada for the past thirty years, exhibiting in Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Toronto. He currently lives in the City of Victoria, and recently finished his MFA at the University of Victoria, where he presented his solo exhibition, Die Strandloper.
