Event Description

Laurel Hibbert

Growing up in Lachine Quebec, along the St. Lawrence river, I spent my childhood as the last of five children, in almost complete freedom and joy. I believe these carefree days allowed me to develop an imagination that has carried me through life. I had parents that allowed messes and experiments. I grew up on stories told by my grandmother of her childhood in the prairies and found myself overwhelmed by the beauty of these lands when I saw my first wheat field. My heart is tied forever to little houses, strong women and their daily tasks and the sheer vitality of children.

I am grateful that I can capture some of these feelings in my images. I am untrained but not, I think, unskilled. I hope that my work can lift the spirits of those who see them.

Bonnie Schmaus

I grew up surrounded by nature, on a farm in Northern Alberta. Early on I took to the "brush" helping dad paint granaries and barns. Seeing the burnt sienna transform the weathered siding - I was smitten. Anything needed painting, I was there. (They called me the mosquito). During high school I took a correspondence art course - just for the fun of it. I had plans for University, to study law. While writing my grade 12 exams; wrote against the government, religion, and something else (not remembering). Consequently I would have to take my grade 12 studies over again. That seemed a waste of time, for just one course. Then the Alberta College of Art came through, was accepted. At seventeen and without my grade 12, Art School seemed the best move. What a great place, individuality and having an opinion were important and encouraged, even. That really started my long journey with the brush - which I am still on today.
