Event Description
Acclaimed Canadian pianist/composer David Braid is a uniquely versatile and talented musician hailed by Macleans Magazine as “a jazz genius to call our own.” Over nine recordings, Braid has racked up six Juno nominations, twice winning the award for “Traditional Jazz Album of the Year”, first in 2005 for Vivid: The David Braid Sextet Live and again in 2012 for Verge.
A prolific composer, Braid’s output includes material written for solo piano, jazz ensembles, chamber groups, and symphony orchestras. Most recently, Braid arranged all of the jazz music and composed much of the score for the upcoming Chet Baker movie biopic “Born to be Blue” starring Ethan Hawk.
For this performance in Victoria at the new Dave Dunnet Community Theatre at Oak Bay High School, Braid will collaborate with the fiery Borealis String Quartet, formerly the String Quartet-in-Residence at UBC for over 10 years, who have received international acclaim for their intense and expressive performances. Braid with the Borealis Quartet fuses the harmonies of European classical music with the inspired spontaneity of jazz in a style described by the Globe & Mail as “hauntingly beautiful.” The Borealis Quartet is Patricia Shih violin, Yuel Yawney violin, Nikita Pogrebnoy viola, Sungyong Lim cello.
