Event Description
Vancouver composer and musician sylvi macCormac will perform with her band Horizon at a benefit gig Saturday, Jan. 30, where she will launch her 20th anniversary project The Feather Songbook & CD.
The show, at Havana Theatre on Commercial drive, is a fundraiser for Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society – an all-afternoon, all-ages event aimed at raising social awareness. It will be the first in a series of Involvers events, which aim to “entertain, inform and inspire” with a mix of cutting-edge music and speakers from community and environmental groups.
sylvi was the natural choice to launch the series, due to her eclectic musical career and commitment to justice causes, and the event and The Feather Songbook & CD will receive a Squamish Nation welcome and blessing given by T'Uy Tanat / Cease Wyss.
sylvi macCormac started out playing folk rock and went on to become an acclaimed soundscape composer. Her latest release sees her combining both approaches, revisiting her favourite folk singalongs with a cinema-for-the-ears sensibility.
“This is not a re-release, it’s transformation. I wanted to create something new and fresh recording with some of Vancouver's finest musicians including Ross Barrett on Saxaphone. The songs are more textured, symphonic and jazzy in places with keys, viola, saxaphone, flute, bass and electronic drums.”
Producing the work with Dave Symington, recording has been a three-year process at the Vancouver Adaptive Music Society’s fully accessible recording studio at GF Strong Rehab Hospital. The Feather Songbook & CD, designed by Nicole Dextras and with music notation by Brenda Baird, is released online by See Through Publishing on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016.
The Involvers concert is held 1:30 – 4:30pm on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive. Also on stage will be Jeff Standfield Band and Richard Quan Band, with information from Homeless advocate Judy Graves, A Loving Spoonful and Megaphone.
Admission is by donation at the door (minimum suggested amount $5) and please also bring non-perishable food items.
