Dave Cormier is showing no signs of slowing down. If anything, while other seasoned rock singer-songwriters are settling into music career retirement, Cormier is ramping it up and still rocking out. Following on the heels of his well-received 2013 record “Cor-Me-Eh,” Dave is releasing a new album - “Little Pieces” - Friday May 8th in Victoria. He will be accompanied on stage by local blues icon and Juno Nominee Bill Johnson. Harmony-driven folk-rock trio Little Nectar will open the show.
“When I wrote my album Cor-Me-Eh I was coming back from a long layoff musically,” Cormier explains. “On my new album Little Pieces - because I was back constantly gigging and writing new songs - I feel the songwriting improved in both the musical and lyrical sense. Little Pieces as a concept are the pieces of ourselves we give away everyday in our relationships. The hope is we get enough of those little pieces back to remain whole.”
With a modern blues-infused rock sound and a weathered voice akin to Bruce Springsteen or John Mellencamp, Cormier's sound is guaranteed to pull you in. Cormier has won Vancouver Island Music Awards in both of the past two years since re-emerging on the scene.
“I was running a business and trying to get the music up and rolling at the same time,” Cormier says of his transition back into music. “Throw some young children into the mix and time becomes a serious issue. Somehow I managed to work the music into my schedule and make it back into the studio to finish the album. In November after 22 years I was fortunate enough to sell my business which will now allow me to concentrate on music full time.”
The album release takes place at Lacey-Lou Tapas Lounge, a venue which has picked up steam in the past year as a happening indie music destination. Doors are at 8:00pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm.
“The show is going to be a stripped down interactive show where I talk about the songs what they mean to me and how they've affected others, “ Cormier says about the intimate vibe planned for May 8. “I'm also going to talk about life as a musician traveling and trying to promote my music. Just me and my acoustic guitar which is how I wrote the album. With my sideman for this show Bill Johnson to add in a little colour.”
Cormier grew up in Nova Scotia, an area steeped in music tradition. His Father was a violinist once considered a child prodigy. Dave's passion for music wasn't in the classical music of his Dad or the traditional music the area is known for but in the raw energy of rock and roll.
