Colour Is Truth
Truth, a human idea, can only be found in human consciousness. ‘True,’ is what an individual defines as true, because ‘true’ is in the eye of the beholder. We are taught to conflate our instruments’ measurements (shorter wavelengths scatter more readily) saying that ‘the sky is not really blue.’
Human sense: the sky is blue. Colour is Truth.
How we observe changes meaning; two Victoria artists, Sue Gentry and Anne Hoban, create slow-art, that encourage the brain’s hidden mechanisms of meaning making into seeing differently.
Sue Gentry’s instinctive gesture paintings opaques context so that viewers must experience their own projections, like they do cloud shapes, in playful awareness. Ambiguous primitive marks and palette allusions create senses of movement, stillness, roughness, suspension, floating layers, and order that teeter before the viewer, on the brink of discoverability, and holds them there.
Anne Hoban’s photo montage (from popular culture’s image machine) builds representations of ephemeral cut-up ideas and reconstitutes them into real world objects – a table at which we consume our ideas; a chair, from which we consume – where explicit meaning is congealed mass culture, veering toward meaning crash.
