Event Description

Western Front New Music's biennial VOICE OVER mind Festival is back championing the world's most unusual and extreme vocalists. The entire festival runs from MARCH 18-21. For more information, follow this link: http://front.bc.ca/events/voice-over-mind-festival-3/

MARCH 21 @ 8pm

Tomomi Adachi

Experimental vocalist, sound poet, improviser and instrument maker Tomomi Adachi (Japan) transforms into a bionic performer with the help of his self-made instruments like the “right hand,” a hand held device with pitch altering tilt sensors. His radical take on vocal techniques, improvisation and electronics pack his solo performances with formidable spontaneity.

Ayelet Rose Gottlieb

Ayelet Rose Gottlieb’s voice, with it’s cool refinement and warm welcome, brings a jazz-inflected, pitch-perfect sense to her eclectic compositions. She is joined by Aram Bajakian (guitar), Peggy Lee (cello), Dylan Van Der Schyff (drums), and the VOICE OVER mind choir to debut a new song collection entitled 12 Lunar Meditations.

Tomomi Adachi
Tomomi Adachi is a Japanese born, Berlin residing performer, composer, sound poet, installation artist, occasional theater director. He studied philosophy and aesthetics at Waseda University in Tokyo. He has played improvised music with voice, live electronics and self-made instruments. He had composed works for his own group “Adachi Tomomi Royal Chorus” which is a punk-style choir. He has performed contemporary music: vocal, live-electronics or performance works by John Cage, Cornelius Cardew, Christian Wolff, Tom Johnson, Dieter Schnebel, TAKAHASHI Yuji, YUASA Joji and Fluxus including world premiere and Japan premiere as Cage’s “Variations VII,” “Europera 5,” and “Waterwalk”. He is the only performer of sound poetry in Japan and has performed Kurt Schwitters’ “Ursonate” for the first time in Japan. He has made several sound installations and original instruments (e.g.”Tomomin”, his hand made electric instrument is familiar with many musicians). Recently, he is focusing his activities on solo performance (with voice, sensors, computer, self-made instruments), sound poetry (especially to the unknown great Japanese sound poetry tradition), video installation and workshop style big ensemble with non-professional voices and instruments.

Ayelet Rose Gottlieb
Ayelet Rose Gottlieb In the little things lurk the big picture, and the details of everyday life suggest the wild regions of the heart. Jerusalem-born vocalist and composer Ayelet Rose Gottlieb sings from these spaces, accessing the tumultuous world of her homeland. These days she celebrates the release of her fourth album,’Roadsides’, giving voice to a distressed hope via Israeli and Palestinian Poetry. The songs of Roadsides (Arogole Music; Oct. 15, 2014) chronicle clunky ceiling fans and hymns of female blessing, watermelon hugs and sorrowful absences. An international performer, explorer of sound and seeker of musical adventures, Ayelet collaborates with cutting edge musicians such as pianist Anat Fort, ETHEL (string quartet), saxophonist Matana Roberts, oudist Ihab Nimer and composer John Zorn, with whom she frequently tours as a member of his a-cappella quartet Mycale. She recently completed a commission to compose music for Michelle Jaffe’s installation “Wappen Field”.
