Event Description
Qristina & Quinn Bachand have spent the last year working with Grammy Award winning producer Joby Baker on their third, much anticipated album, Little Hinges. The album is funded in part by a grant from FACTOR (Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings) through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada Music Fund) and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters.
With Qristina residing mostly in the Netherlands and Quinn in Boston on his first year of studies at Berklee College of Music, having them home for the holidays is a real treat for their many local fans. And especially so since they plan to pre-release the new album for hometown audiences on Saturday, January 3rd! The official release will be at their Celtic Connections concert in Glasgow, Scotland on January 16th. They are very excited to have guitarist Adam Dobres (of the Ruth Moody Band) and Jesse Boland (of Towers and Trees) on percussion joining them on stage.
“Little Hinges” takes Qristina & Quinn into a new musical direction, one that is less traditional and more indie / alternative / folk / roots oriented. The album’s title gets its name from the saying “big doors swing on little hinges”. Although writer W. Clement Stone was not referring to the power of art among a captive audience, the fact is undeniable: music moves. We engage with music for emotional release. Music inspires us to create and internalize and can even change the outcome of our decisions. Music has a history of defining culture – bringing us to battle as much as it is the sound of celebration in times of peace. We share music, we communicate through music and, like all other art forms, we identify with music.
The album is split into two sections, with an interlude entitled “Little Hinges” connecting the two. After the more conventional first half of the album, “Little Hinges’ quite literally opens the door to the second section, in which Qristina & Quinn venture farther from their traditional roots.
Little Hinges features a balanced mix of instrumental and vocal tracks by both siblings. Known for his multi-instrumental talents, on the album Quinn plays acoustic guitar, fiddle, tenor banjo, clawhammer banjo, percussion, electric guitar, bass guitar, auto harp, Wurlitzer, Rhodes, Hammond B3, pump organ, keyboard, tambourine, bodhran and also sings! Qristina takes most of the lead on vocals, as well as fiddle, and adds some percussion, glockenspiel, and backing vocals to the mix. Joby Baker also plays percussion on several tracks.
This is a concert you won't want to miss!
