The Galiano Ensemble of Victoria is celebrating its 15th season this year! In their second performance of the season, the Galiano Ensemble is presenting an all-English concert with a collection of wonderful miniatures from six of Great Britain’s most beloved composers.
William Boyce is one of England's very few Late Baroque composers. His short Symphony No. 1 is very charming and is part of a collection described as having a “breezily open-air quality.” Gerald Finzi's Prelude, originally conceived as the opening movement to a chamber symphony that was never completed, stands on its own as a quiet and reflective piece.
Ralph Vaughan Williams' Charterhouse Suite is a collection of six piano
pieces arranged for string orchestra. It is named after the boarding school
he attended at age 14 which was one of the few schools at the time to
encourage musical expression.
Frank Bridge's An Irish Melody is a paraphrase on Irish Tune from County Derry, also known as O Danny Boy. Edward Elgar's Sospiri (Italian for “sighs”) is quiet, intimate and highly evocative music.
Lastly, An English Suite, for string orchestra by Hubert Parry is an incredibly charming set of dances from the composer most known for his grand choral anthems I Was Glad and Jerusalem. An English Suite was unfinished at the time of his death in 1918.
Be sure to begin the New Year with a delightful evening of wonderful chamber music performed by Conductor Yariv Aloni and the orchestra.
