BEND SINISTER: 2012/13 was a busy year for Bend Sinister with the band releasing their American debut Small Fame via Nail Distribution. Their North American tour schedule brought them to CMJ, SXSW, Canada Music Week and Breakout West. The band enjoyed opening slots for Awolnation and Valient Thorr in the US and headlining shows throughout Canada from Victoria to Halifax. Small Fame enjoyed runs up the CBC Radio 3 Chart (#8), Canada’s Earshot (#18) and CMJ (#115) and garnered the band nominations for a Sirius XM “Best Emerging Artist” award and a Western Canadian Music Award for “Best Rock Recording”.
The band has recently finished recording their follow up with two time Grammy Nominated producer Joe Marlett at Signature Sound in San Diego. Continuing with their penchant for infectious melodies mixed with soaring guitar and crushing B3 organ, the as yet untitled album is slated for release mid February 2014 via File Under: Music.

At the heart of Bend Sinister sits singer and keyboard player Dan Moxon. His soft spoken and warm demeanor belie the frenetic stage antics and vocal gymnastics that have made him one of the most unforgettable front men in the Canadian indie scene. His song writing draws from a wealth of influences and he is as equally at home softly singing over a piano ballad as he is wailing over crushing drums and guitars. Not to be outshined however, the rest of the band is just as dynamic. If Moxon is the heart, drummer Jason Dana is the gut. Channeling the best beats of Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin, Dana propels the band through their live set like a twin-engine jet. At the flanks are guitar player Joseph Blood and bassist Matt Rhode. Although often categorized as a “prog” band, the group strives to be more than just guitar solos and technique. While always looking to challenge themselves as players and writers, the band also tries to keep a classic pop sensibility in mind. “There are definitely ‘holy grails’ in terms of pop writing” says Joseph Blood, “records that perfectly balance songwriting with concepts, the Beach Boys and the Beatles did it and newer bands like Dr Dog or the Flaming Lips are able to get close. I think that’s where Bend Sinister hopes to get as each record goes by.”
Small Fame, received rave reviews from NOW Magazine, CBC, the Georgia Straight and a slew of other online blogs and print media. They have performed at the Dawson City Music Festival, Envol at Macadam in Quebec City, POP Montreal, Sled Island in Calgary, Olio Festival in Vancouver and Live at Squamish. 2014 brought the band to SXSW and invitations to record for Daytrotter.com in San Francisco and JBTV in Chicago. They have toured with and opened up for METRIC, Hot Hot Heat, Dragonette, Born Ruffians, Electric 6, Minus the Bear and We are Scientists.

THE GAY NINETIES biography:
The 1890’s era, also known as The Gay Nineties was a memorable time and experience characterized by societal scandal, suffragette movements, and decadent art. ‘Gay Nineties’, the band are no different, delivering an explosive live performance showcasing their clear musical sensibility and style, inspired by multiple decades of artistic influences.

“The kind of songs that would impress even The Kooks or The Arctic Monkeys” - Discorder Magazine

Working with Producer, Scott Ternan (54-40, Sam Roberts) and Mixer, Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, Mounties), Gay Nineties have spent the last 6 months in the studio creating a new full length record which is equal parts swagger, psychedelia keyboard, stomping drums, and tight harmonies. The first single “Letterman” has received continuous airplay on Vancouver’s 102.7 The Peak as well as national rotation on CBC Radio3. The full album will be released in the summer of 2014 followed by continuous touring of Canada and USA.

“As soon as I heard them play for the first time, I practically forced them straight into the recording studio.”
-Steve Bays of Hot Hot Heat

“Gay Nineties easily stand as my pick for surprise standout from the entire festival.” - Indie Machine CMW 2013

“Whoa, is this what The Zombies would sound like if they weren’t doing the Casino circuit?” - Ion Magazine

Gay Nineties have found themselves in the Top 20 of the Peak Performance Project, playing showcases in CMW, NewYork City, and Montreal, as well as touring with The Walkmen. Their EP ‘Coming Together’ (released on First Love Records) has garnered critical acclaim and been distributed throughout North America and beyond.

THE TOURIST COMPANY: “We’ve made it so far!” It may be a lyric from one of their tunes, but for The Tourist Company, it’s also a factual observation. Given that just over a year ago the band had only played a handful of shows behind their first album, the group has definitely made leaps and bounds to progress not only their career, but their sound and identity, growing to become one of Vancouver’s most intriguing new acts. They’ve been said to sound like worlds colliding, marrying the heart of storytelling folk alongside indie rock’s driving sonic qualities with an element of hip-hop’s groove.

They’ve released 2 EP’s (the Jordan Klassen produced Space Race, and acoustic love story Atlantic), toured extensively throughout B.C. and Alberta including summer festivals Jam In Jubilee, a headlining slot at Harmony Arts Festival, and Khatsalano, won the title of Regional Champion in CBC Music’s Searchlight competition, all culminating in a Top 3 placement in the highly contested Peak Performance Project; Canada’s largest artist development program.
For a group of friends that started out playing together at summer camp, they’ve shown that their continual pursuit for the next challenge is not only rewarding, but an experience that they don’t want to do alone. Won’t you consider travelling with them?
