ERIC ALEXANDER / DAVID HAZELTINE QUARTET:

featuring ERIC ALEXANDER tenor saxophone, DAVID HAZELTINE piano, KEN LISTER bass, JESSE CAHILL drums.

How good is tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander? When he competed in the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, he placed second behind Joshua Redman and ahead of third-place finisher Chris Potter. Alexander has been incredibly prolific as a recording artist, releasing 35 satisfying albums as a leader, including his latest Chicago Fire, which pays homage to Windy City sax greats such as Eddie Harris and Von Freeman. He has performed and recorded with McCoy Tyner, Pat Martino, Harold Mabern, and One For All (with Jim Rotondi, Steve Davis, David Hazeltine, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth), among many others. Influenced by tenor greats such as Dexter Gordon and George Coleman, Alexander has developed his own big and robust sound that always makes an impact.

David Hazeltine has successfully forged his own distinctive style out of the accumulated weight of jazz piano tradition. His influences extend from Art Tatum and Bud Powell to Barry Harris and Cedar Walton. Hazeltine’s playing hits the sweet spot between tradition and innovation. The late great Walton called Hazeltine “the brightest star on the jazz piano horizon style” and noted that “his style has a deep-seated commitment to jazz history while communicating a wealth of today’s ideas.” Hazeltine has worked with Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Louis Hayes, Marlena Shaw, and many others. Hazeltine and Alexander have an especially close rapport, having made sublime music together for years.

Alexander and Hazeltine will perform with two great players on the Vancouver scene that former patrons of the Cellar Jazz Club heard on many memorable nights: bassist Ken Lister and drummer Jesse Cahill.
