Event Description

"Raising Voices: Engaging Youth with Spoken Word" :: 12:00 - 2:00 PM :: Free

Youth are far and away the fastest growing demographic in the spoken word community, with Youth Slams and high school tournaments popping up all across the country. A large portion of this growth has been fostered through the outreach work of spoken word artists in their local high schools. Come engage with organizers from some of Canada's top organizers of youth-focused spoken word programming.

"Save a Tree: Speak a Poem" :: 2:00 - 4:00 PM :: $10 (regular) $5 (student)

Nature has often been maligned as a clichéd poetic subject - one that lacks the urgency or importance of poems about systemic political issues and human relationships. But in this day and age of environmental degradation, environmental poetry has a growing political urgency. This showcase will feature poets who write about the environment, and our corrupted relationship with the ecosystems that sustain our species.

"Meridian" :: 4:00 - 6:00 PM :: $10 (regular) $5 (student)

“Meridian” is a research/performance collaboration by four faculty members at Vancouver Island University, Nanaimo, BC: Robin Davies (Digital Media Studies); Kevin Mazutinec (Art and Design); and Justin McGrail (Art and Design); Marian van der Zon (Digital Media Studies, Women's Studies). The project involves the use of digital technologies and live performance to create a multi-media event that combines projected-video, ambient-electronic music, acoustic instruments, processed and looped vocals, and spoken word poetry. The resulting blend of prepared and improvised sounds, sights, and words creates an experimental, immersive performance that explores technology, humanity, and the spaces in between the two.

Meridian began in January 2012, with the creation of an hour-long performance that premiered on March 12, 2012 at Nanaimo's Malaspina Theatre. Since, Meridian has been presented multiple times in a range of venues. A second performance work will premiere in November 2014.
