Event Description

Pacific Peoples’ Partnership (PPP) is hosting the 7th annual One Wave Festival on September 19th and 20th. One Wave is PPP’s inspired action to celebrate and honor connections to the Pacific while building identity and community. One Wave engages individuals to create one movement among all peoples to address issues including cultural integrity, language loss, climate change, ocean pollution, food security, Indigenous identity, racism, and long-term effects of colonialism.

The Changemakers’ Summit on Friday September 19th, co-hosted by the Centre for Asia Pacific Initiatives and Puppets for Peace, will be held at the UVic Cadboro Commons from 1:00-3:30 PM. A panel entitled “Puppets, Performance & Social Change” features puppeteers Sutrisno Hartana and Wendy Passmore, Witness Blanket project coordinator Rosy Hartman, and Pedalling for Papua campaigner Jeremy Bally, who cycled across 7 countries with a creative performance. The panel explores the role of the arts in social transformation. It includes a free lunch and puppet making activity. Following this, local groups tackling environmental and social justice issues will lead discussions about ways of becoming active in creating social change.

“PPP recognizes the need for social discourse around these issues through creative means,” said April Ingham, director of PPP. “Our mission is to engage, educate, and activate.”

More festivities take place Saturday September 20th from 12:00-6:00 PM in Centennial Square. The event features live music by Carmanah and Kemal Evans, hip hop by Dia-Nos, and cultural dance performances from the North and South Pacific. Local NGOs will be present to promote their work. A special viewing of the Witness Blanket, drawing attention to the history of residential schools in Canada, will be held at Victoria City Hall from 12:00-6:00PM. A group photo to mark the Global Day of Climate Action will take place at 2:00PM.

The World Fisheries Trust Seaquarium, storytelling, and a puppet workshop make this a fun event for kids. Costumed performers (Cascadian Crusaders), walking puppets (Puppets for Peace), a market of local artisans and live art performances will be highlights. The centerpiece of the arts program is the Tetrahedron, a 14’ recycled wood art installation.

Updates on the festival can be found at the One Wave Festival Facebook page. Full festival schedule will be posted at www.pacificpeoplespartnership.org
