Event Description

Victoria audiences will have the opportunity to while away their mid-summer nights as the multi-award winning Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre presents Judy! - The Judy Garland Story written by noted Canadian playwright Paul Ledoux. Having proved a sell out success at many of the major theatres across Canada since its premiere more than thirty years ago, Judy! features such perennially favourite Garland hits as Swanee, Puttin' On The Ritz and and Zing Went the Strings of My Heart. All in all, this classic 'juke box' musical features more than twenty hit songs made famous by one of the twentieth century’s most famous singers and actors.

Following the story of Garland's phenomenal rise as a child star, through her struggles with alcohol and drugs and strife with a Hollywood studio system that used and abused her, Judy! ends triumphantly with an iconic performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow near the end of her remarkable career. Called "the greatest entertainer who ever lived." by her contemporary and co-star, Fred Astaire, this one woman musical is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Join the highly talented Blue Bridge creative team as they wend their way through the phenomenal book of songs made famous by a woman who was named by the American Film Institute as one of the ten greatest female stars in the history of American Cinema.

Starring veteran Canadian and Broadway singer and actor Tracey Moore, Judy! is directed by Blue Bridge Artistic Director, Brian Richmond and features the talents of a quartet of Victoria's finest musicians led by music director Jan Stirling on piano, Damian Graham on drums, Brendan McGuigan on bass and Matt MacLean on brass and Synth. Set and costumes and lights are designed by the talented team (Patricia Reilly and Bryan Kenney) that brought us this year's hit The Glass Menagerie and choreography is by the legendary director and choreographer Sylvia Hosie.
