Event Description

The Stewart-Lee-Dwyer Trio, led by 16 year-old Vancouver Island woodwind sensation Conn Stewart, appears at iconic Hermann’s Jazz Club on Wednesday, August 28th, featuring rising young Canadian stars Ben Dwyer (bass) McGill University (Montreal), and John Lee (drums) Berklee College of Music (Boston). They will be presenting two eclectic, infectious, high energy sets, musically communicating in a “Trialogue” guaranteed to heat up the room. Restaurant licensed, all ages welcome; jazz and music fans won’t want to miss this late summer treat!

Conn Stewart (tenor/alto/baritone/soprano saxes, clarinet, flute, vocals) has led or appeared in a number of B.C. top “young lion,” and adult and professional, combos and bands, since taking up the saxophone at 14. He has impressed audiences from Comox to Victoria, Vancouver to Portland, at venues including the Cellar Jazz Club, The Kozmik Zoo, Jazz Vespers at Sylvan United, The Queen's Hotel, The Georgia Strait Jazz Society series, Live Jazz at Crofton Hotel, West Café, and Blue Frog Studios. He leads The Jazz Apostles, NJaM: The New Jazz Messengers, The Hot Seven Vintage Jazz Band, The Conn Stewart Quintet/Quartet, and the Stewart Gorenko Duo, and plays various saxophones in Vancouver’s Adrian Michael Quartet, Mingus Amongus sextet, and B.C. All Star Big Band, and Vancouver Island’s Arrowsmith Big Band.

John Lee (drums, keys, bass, guitar), of Nanaimo, recently appeared as the drummer with the Cyrus Chestnut sextet at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at the Lincoln Centre in New York. An outstanding young multi-instrumentalist, he has spent the past three years studying jazz performance at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, playing on the east coast, and has appeared with jazz luminaries such as Terrell Stafford, David Santoro, Greg Osby, Phil Dwyer, Ingrid Jensen, and Christine Jensen, among others, when not leading his own combos.

Ben Dwyer (bass, alto sax), originally from Qualicum, has played at the Montreal, Vancouver, and Victoria Jazz Festivals, and with a number of prominent jazz figures including Don Thompson, Seamus Blake, Ingrid Jensen, and Alan Jones, and periodically appears with renowned Canadian saxophonist Phil Dwyer, in addition to leading his own combos. He has spent the past two years in the jazz performance program at Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and currently plays out of Montreal where he is a highly sought after bassist.
