Greater Victoria public high schools
Event Description
Xchanges is delighted to present the inaugural exhibition “Xchanges Student Invitational”, featuring the artwork of Grade 12 students in six Greater Victoria public high schools. The exhibition focuses on diversity of themes and media created by selected students.
20 students overall were selected from six high schools, with work representing a broad range of disciplines and interests. Artwork was selected by members of Xchanges, with a different member going to each school so the curatorial process was open to all possibilities.
Included in the exhibition from Belmont (teacher - Ruth Bain) are: Amber McLeod-Champagne, Laura Rechwan and Sarah Hilton; from Mount Douglas (teacher - Cindy Ackland): Akira Weng, Jilliann Delaney-Lyngard and Sang-Do Lee; from Oak Bay (teacher - Georgina Hope): Duncan Grant, James Letkeman and Naomi Evers; from Spectrum (art and photography programs, teachers - Moira Raynor and Rene Schwarz): Andrew Coderre, Melissa Fraser, Quin Mallory, Ren Hlasny and Trevor Lang; from Stelly’s (teacher - Stephen Strutynski): Ali Green, Celine Bain and Rachel Hunter; from Victoria High (teacher - Alison Pugh): Alberta Trelawny, Medina Durzi-Percy and Regina Vega.
With this exhibition, Xchanges Gallery wants to honour the talent of these young artists and support the creation of art by providing an opportunity for them to show their work in a professional setting. In doing so, Xchanges hopes to inform them about opportunities and venues available to them once they graduate and to encourage their continued art making practice once they leave school.
