Event Description

Join us for another evening of creative revelry and contemporary art celebration featuring custom bevies, music and activities inspired by current exhibitions. URBANITE returns featuring the innovative Montreal-based multi-media group Mere Phantoms. Drawing upon the history of animation, shadow puppetry, and projection Mere Phantoms will create fantastical 3D immersive spaces at the Gallery exploring our personal relationship to the urban environment. At URBANITE attendees will have the opportunity to explore and play with these interactive vignettes. This event is offered in conjunction with TRACES | Fantasy Worlds & Tales of Truth, on at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria from January 18 – April 13, 2013.

Tickets available at the door or available in advance online at www.urbanite.eventbrite.ca

*Please note this is an 19+ event (no minors).

Like the work of all good storytellers, the artists in this exhibition captivate the viewer with their imagined worlds informed by eerily familiar narratives. Through each artist’s distinct vision of humanity, these illusory spaces—in some cases haunted by either memory or mythology—reflect back to us ugliness, despair, complexity, beauty, opulence, and frivolity. What distinguishes the work of Daniel Barrow, Alison Norlen, and Ed Pien is not just that they use drawing as their primary means of creation for these stories, but that they push the parameters and possibilities of what drawing can be by testing its material, spatial, and thematic considerations.
