Event Description
If you were given one last chance to speak, what would you say?
In Sonnets for an Old Century José Rivera (two-time Obie Award-winning playwright and Academy Award-nominated screenplay writer) presents a group of recently deceased strangers, from culturally diverse backgrounds, who have collected in a waiting room in the afterlife. En route to their final resting place the Gatekeeper presents them with an opportunity to say anything, to unburden themselves. The result is a collection of poignant, funny and haunting narratives.
Sonnets for an Old Century will be showcased in Victoria’s 25th Annual Fringe Festival from August 26th to September 4th, 2011 by the new Victoria-based theatre company Rapid Rocket Productions and is directed by Holly Jonson (Atomic Vaudeville, Skit For Brains, Sin City the Live Improvised Soap Opera.) Jonson illustrates, “Upon my first experience reading Sonnets, I immediately fell in love…much like how the character Yusef Bulos from the play describes falling in love with his son, ‘A swift endless drop, wind blowing in my face, down a perfectly delicious abyss…and I just…I couldn’t control myself…’ I immediately knew that I wanted to bring life to these characters, it was just a matter of when and how. This is a challenging piece of writing but I am absolutely delighted to be directing such a lyrical, haunting, and beautifully poetic play. Victoria Fringe-goers are in for a real treat!”
Sonnets unites local actors Alan Penty (Sin City the Live Improvised Soap Opera,) Aleisha Kalina (Impromaniacs,) Austin Obiajunwa (Spectrum's Urinetown) Bill Nance (Victoria Shakespeare Society's Hamlet) Holly Jonson, Mily Mumford (Atomic Vaudeville,) and Shaan Rahman (Vula Productions' Atticdwellers.) The actors each play multiple characters creating what actor Aleisha Kalina describes as "a wonderful tapestry of human experience highlighting the highs, lows, and the seemingly unimportant moments that change people's lives.”
Sound design for Sonnets is a collaborative work by Daniel Ainslie, Eric Hogg (Soma Sound,) and Holly Jonson and will be mixed live by Eric Hogg.
This will be the second time Rapid Rocket Productions brings Sonnets to the stage, as earlier this year they presented the Canadian Premiere of 'Excerpts from: Sonnets for an Old Century' at Langham Court Theatre’s ACTivate Festival, where the performance gained adjudicators' praise.
