Event Description

Join us at Camas for a lively discussion with controversial anarchist author John Zerzan.

"Postmodernism is apparently what we are left with when the modernization process is complete and nature is gone for good."

..."The image no longer refers primarily to some `original', situated elsewhere in the `real' world; it increasingly refers only to other images. In this way it reflects how lost we are, how removed from nature, in the ever more mediated world of technological capitalism."

"The real danger consists in not challenging, at the most basic level, the alienation and domination threatening to completely overcome nature, what is left of the natural in the world and within ourselves. "
==================================

John Zerzan first shot into celebrity philosopher status in 1995 after the New York Times featured him in 1995 as a supporter of the Unabomber's anti-technology doctrine. He has since become a leading light of the primitivist movement in the US.

John Zerzan (born 1943) is an highly controversial American anarchist primitivist philosopher and author. His works criticize agricultural civilization as inherently oppressive, and advocate drawing upon the ways of life of prehistoric humans as an inspiration for what a free society should look like. Some of his criticism has extended as far as challenging domestication, language, symbolic thought (such as mathematics and art) and the concept of time.

Zeran was also the editor of th popular underground magazine Green Anarchy.
His five major books are Elements of Refusal (1988), Future Primitive and Other Essays (1994), Running on Emptiness (2002), Against Civilization: Readings and Reflections (2005) and Twilight of the Machines (2008). A collection of his most fundamental texts on the roots of civilization, "Origins" (2010), is currently being published by Black and Green Press and FC Press.

this is part of a 3 day fundraiser for Camas Books. Day one is John Zerzan Catastrophe of Postmodernism, Day 2 (feb 5) John Zerzan and Matt Hern discuss the possibilities for sustainable futures and their relation to cities in primitivism or Urbanism. day 3, Matt Hern will be doing a deschooling discussion called Why Doesn't School Work?
